Last week, Afropunk, a cultural movement celebrating the creativity and freedom of spirit in alternative Black culture, shared on their website a photo series called Golden Masks’ that celebrate the traditional African hair braiding.
The series was conceptualized and brought to life by Guadeloupe-based Art Director Marion Echavel (restaCREA) and photographer Yvan Cimadure-Méry.
The striking visual project re-imagines elements of tribal, Egyptian and diaspora cultural aesthetics to showcases black female beauty throughout history. Echavel also styled the hair for each of the looks
